H-ELP trainer, Laurie Pond, visted Nepal last month to see how the elephants and mahouts were progressing at camps in Bardia and Chitwan. The over-riding message is that while the methods are having a positive effect, that limited staffing makes implementation a challenge. H-ELP’s long term commitment to Nepal’s elephants means that we will now be exploring ways in which we can address this situation.
Best wishes to all HELP’s supporters for a wonderful 2013. Thank you for your contributions to the welfare of working elephants and their handlers. In 2013 we’ll be busy creating new ways of ensuring our work continues, and ways for you to get involved in the cause. Our work will be done when elephants no longer face the prospect of a punishing start to their years of service; and their handlers are safer because their skills are informed by learning theory.
